The Askar SQA130 is built for one job — deep-sky astrophotography — and it's built to do that job the moment it's out of the case. The quintuplet Petzval design bakes the field flattener into the optical formula, so you get a flat, corrected field edge to edge for up to a medium format camera with no separate flattener to buy, spacing, or tuning. That means no fiddly back focus adjustment work that eats your first few clear nights.
At 130mm of aperture and f/4.8, this is a fast astrograph. That speed is the whole point: it pulls faint nebulosity and galaxy detail out of the sky in a fraction of the integration time a slower scope needs — which, on the Front Range where clear nights are precious, is the difference between a finished project and one you're still chasing next season.
Coverage that keeps up with big sensors
The SQA130 throws a medium-format image circle (55mm) that fully covers a 44mm full-frame sensor with room to spare. In plain terms: no vignetting worries with large modern cameras, and enough clean field left over for off-axis guiding and filter wheels without clipping the corners. If you're running — or planning to run — a full-frame or larger sensor, this is the coverage that makes it work.
The 624mm focal length lands in a genuinely useful spot: wide enough for large emission nebulae and sweeping star fields, long enough to frame bigger galaxies and clusters well. It's a focal length you won't outgrow after one season.
Optics that earn the "APO"
Two elements of SD (Special Dispersion) glass in the five-element design suppress the chromatic aberration that shows up as bloated, purple-fringed stars in lesser scopes. The result is tight, neutral, pinpoint stars across the frame and clean color you don't have to rescue in processing.
Built to connect to your gear
The rear cell accepts M48 / M54 / M68 adapters and supports a 46–76mm back-focus range (55mm recommended) — enough flexibility to dial in most camera, filter-wheel, and OAG combinations without a custom spacer hunt. The built-in focuser keeps the imaging train rigid and repeatable.
An honest word on what it needs
This is a serious instrument, and it has a serious footprint. The OTA is 9.18 kg (about 20 lb), and roughly 11.76 kg (about 26 lb) with rings and dovetail — before you add camera, guiding, and cabling. Plan on a solid imaging mount with real payload headroom (think ZWO AM7 or 50 lb capacity EQ mount) to get the foundation this optic deserves. Not sure your mount is up to it?
