Put a Canon EF lens and a 2" filter on your ZWO cooled camera

Why we like the ZWO filter drawer for Canon EOS lenses:

  • Lens adapter and filter slot in one: a Canon EF bayonet on the front, a 2" filter drawer in the middle and an M42 thread on the back, so your camera lenses become wide-field astrographs with a filter.
  • Back focus already worked out: 26.5mm of drawer plus the 17.5mm back focus of a ZWO cooled camera is exactly 44mm, Canon EF's flange distance. No spacers to figure out.
  • Wide fields with a nebula filter: a 200mm lens on an ASI533MC Pro with a duo-band filter frames about 3.2° square, a nice fit for the Rosette, the Heart or the Veil.
  • Worth knowing: EF lenses get no power from the drawer, so the aperture stays wide open and autofocus is off. Lenses that focus by wire (many STM and some USM lenses) may not focus at all without power.

The ZWO Filter Drawer for Canon EOS Lens (FD-EOS) connects a Canon EF camera lens to a ZWO cooled astronomy camera and holds one 2" mounted filter in a pull-out holder. It fits ZWO cooled cameras with 17.5mm back focus such as the ASI533MC Pro and ASI2600MC Pro. It's 70mm across and 26.5mm thick.

Key specs: Canon EF lens bayonet · M42 × 0.75 male camera thread · 26.5mm thick (44mm with a 17.5mm ZWO camera) · holds one 2" mounted filter (M48 × 0.75) · double magnets plus lock screw · M54M-M42F adapter included

What you can image

  • Big nebula regions: the North America and Pelican nebulae, the Heart and Soul, and the Orion complex at 85 to 135mm.
  • Single large nebulae: the Rosette, the Veil and the California Nebula at 200 to 300mm.
  • Galaxies and clusters: Andromeda, the Pleiades and the Double Cluster with a UV/IR cut filter.

How it works

Thread the drawer's M42 male side into your camera, mount the lens on the EF bayonet, and slide a 2" filter in its holder into the drawer. Magnets pull the holder in and the side lock screw takes up any play. Focus manually on a bright star, ideally with a Bahtinov mask. If you want to stop a fast lens down, a step-down ring or aperture mask on the front of the lens does it.

Using a third-party filter? ZWO says its cell must be under 50.8mm in diameter and under 7.5mm tall, with an M48 × 0.75 thread no longer than 2.7mm.

ZWO Filter Drawer for Canon EOS Lens FAQ

Which ZWO cameras does it fit?

ZWO cooled cameras with 17.5mm back focus, such as the ASI1600, 294, 183, 533, 071, 2600 and 6200. It doesn't fit the GT series. The full-frame ASI6200 connects through the included M54M-M42F adapter.

Can I control aperture and autofocus?

No. The drawer has no electronics, so EF lenses sit wide open with autofocus off. Choose a lens with a mechanical manual-focus ring; focus-by-wire lenses may not focus without power.

Will the lens reach infinity focus?

Yes. The drawer's 26.5mm plus the camera's 17.5mm equals Canon EF's 44mm flange distance. A filter shifts focus slightly, which the lens's focus ring takes up.

Canon EOS or Nikon drawer?

Buy the one that matches the lenses you own. The Nikon version is 29mm thick to match Nikon F's 46.5mm flange distance; otherwise they work the same way.
